ENERGY
Access to affordable and reliable energy is a prerequisite for sustainable development and alleviation of poverty. It is therefore of importance to develop and implement environmentally friendly and efficient methods for production and use of energy, including use of renewable energy sources. This can include introduction of new energy sources and/or involve increased energy efficiency in existing energy consumption. Focus can be on households, productive activities, or social needs (schools, hospitals etc.). It is important to emphasize that energy is not an end in itself, but a means to achieve other poverty reduction objectives.
With the increasing importance of climate change, sustainable energy is promoted as both an adaptation and mitigation solution. Conventional fossil fuel based energy production is a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and a transition to more energy efficient systems and increasing reliance on renewable energy is one of the solutions to climate change mitigation. Improving access to energy will also increase the resilience of communities towards the impacts of climate change, thus address the adaptation challenge.
