EDUCATION
Danish support to education in the partner countries is directed at the whole sector comprising all levels from early childhood care and development to tertiary education. Emphasis is on basic education as defined in the six fundamental goals on Education for All (EFA) and the related strategies as defined in the Dakar Framework for Action (Dakar, Senegal, April 2000). These goals and strategies also contribute directly to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) where Goal #2 (Achievement of universal primary education) and part of Goal #3 (Promote gender equality and empower women) are related to education.
Currently Danish bilateral support to education comprises the following partner countries: Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nepal, Nicaragua and Zambia. In addition, assistance is provided to support education in Afghanistan and Southern Sudan.
Through the multilateral aid mechanisms Denmark collaborates with the World Bank, UNICEF and UNESCO in their work towards achieving the EFA and the MDG targets. From 2007 Denmark is a contributory partner to the EFA-FTI Catalytic Fund. Starting at DKK 25 million the Danish CF contribution has increased to DKK 135 million in 2009.
Denmark strives at strengthening a balance between qualitative and quantitative aspects of the education sector. This concerns access to education through support to the provision of adequate infrastructure and improvement of the content and quality of education, including education materials, teacher training and capacity building in key institutions and administrative structures relating to the education system.
