DANIDA'S RESPONSE TO THE INTERNATIONAL HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC

There is an urgent need to intensify the fight against the epidemic and HIV/AIDS remain a strategic priority for Denmark’s development cooperation in the years to come.

In 2011 a thematic review of the Danish support to the fight against HIV/AIDS from 2005-2010 was carried out. During the review period, the goal of allocating 1 billion DKK annually to HIV/AIDS was achieved. The purpose was to assure that development countries gain the most out of the extensive Danish support and thereby contribute to the realization of an AIDS-free generation. Overall, the thematic review is positive towards the amount and the type of initiatives supported by Denmark, and the core of the Danish HIV/AIDS strategy is continuously considered relevant. Still, there is a need to adjust some elements in the Danish support to make it in line with the latest development of the epidemic. The Danish support should be focused and made more efficient in order to minimise the number of people infected and assure that as many people as possible gain access to treatment, care and support.

Main goals for Denmark’s international assistance to the fight against HIV/AIDS includes:

Strengthening national planning and implementation of HIV/AIDS programmes, including supporting efforts aimed at improving coordination and harmonisation of the response at country-level.
Increasing focus on women and strengthening the linkages between gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programmes.
Increasing focus on the synergies between HIV prevention and treatment.
Increasing focus on young people and on children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
Strengthening the involvement of the civil society in the planning and implementation of the HIV/AIDS response.
Fighting stigma and discrimination.
