URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND THE POOR - LESSONS LEARNED FROM DANISH ASSISTANCE TO SOUTH AFRICA - TECHNICAL NOTE
New Technical Note from Technical Advisory Services:
Urban Development and the Poor - Lessons Learned from Danish Assistance to Southern Africa
The Technical Note on urban development and the poor draws lessons from over a decade of Danida support for urban environmental management in Southern and Eastern Africa. It is based upon several reviews and studies of Danida support and has been prepared with assistance from International Institute of Environmental and Development, IIED. Though the note builds upon African examples, it presents general observations with relevance for many different contexts.
A large and growing share of the world’s poverty is in the urban areas and urban poverty is closely associated with unhealthy living and working environments. However, urban areas are also drivers of change, and engines of economic growth. Past Danida support for urban environment has demonstrated the importance of involving all key stakeholders, giving a lead role to local government, and engaging with national policy processes. Support to urban development has increasingly gone beyond a sectoral approach, applying more integrated approaches, involving governance aspects, infrastructure investments, environmental management etc.
